I opened my swollen eye. Garth stared down at me. “What happened, Major? Where’s Anneka?”

The sound of her name roused me. “Anneka! They have Anneka! We’ve got to stop them. They know the films were phonies. They’ll kill her!” I used the desk for leverage, pulling myself to my feet. Overwhelming dizziness nearly knocked me to the floor again. Anneka … Anneka … I tried to take a deep breath but my battered ribs screamed in agony. Dragging myself to the wall, I pounded against it, tried to pry it open, but it wouldn’t budge.

“What are you doing, Major?” Detective Hunt said, running up to me.

“They went out through a passage behind this wall.” I thought for a moment, turned toward the door, barreling through. Anneka … I ran past those in my way, stumbled toward the bar. I rolled over it, grabbing the bartender who had lied to me before. He had the answer. I grabbed him by the lapels and shoved him up against the wall behind the bar. With blood flowing, I growled at him. “Don’t give me any bullshit. Where does that panel lead to?”

He squirmed in my grasp, but couldn’t get free. “I know nothin’ about a panel.”

I lifted him off his feet, smashing his back against the mirror. His head broke the glass. “Wrong answer. Tell me where it leads, or I’ll tear you to pieces!”

Garth stood behind me, stunned and silent. I pounded the bartender against the wall once more, “Talk!”

“Okay, okay. It leads to an underground private parking garage at the rear of the building,” he whimpered. He stared at me, his eyes reeking of fear. I dropped him on the floor. “If I don’t get my wife back unhurt, I’ll hold you responsible.”

“I know where that is,” I heard from the other side of the bar. There stood Deputy Haskill. “I’ll get Ernie Hammond and Detective Hunt. We’ll take my cruiser.”

Garth helped me over the bar so I could get through to the main floor. “I’m with you, Major. The Bentley probably has more power than what they’re driving.”

“Who are we after?” Haskill stopped for a moment to ask.

“Lorenzo Marcini, Bruno Kafka, and his baby brother, Sammy.”

“Ya mean, Bruno, the place’s bouncer?” Haskill cried in amazement. “I know that guy. We better get a couple more policemen to take him and his brother in.”

“Ain’t got time,” I yelled. “They’ve got my wife. We need to stop by my room. I’m gonna use my Colt on those bastards!”
